denial can be an ugly thing

last friday plug was on the cards.detonate, £9.50 a ticket.prior to the walk down everyone had achieved a certain level of inebriation and i was no exception.for some reason at the beginning of the journey, the 6 or 7 people walking down to the place seemed like a rabble numbering 20 and upwards, everyone of them hungry for violence.

this soon passed and a discussion broke out between me and one of the members of this seemingly blood thirsty rabble.a nostalgic mist clouded the discussion and fond memories of ape skatepark and video classics, which are hidden away at the back of the lucky few's mind for just such a nostalgia trip, came rushing to the foreground.during that conversation i realised that we should not complain about the state of bmx at the moment, with it's web videos, trends and the 2mph ledge ferrets; we should really be trying to influence bmx to be a hybrid of the progression that's taken place and the bad assedness and good times mindset characteristic of the earlier years.it seemed to me then, during our venture to plug, absolutely imperative that the new breed learn about the stalwarts of quality bmx viewing: bicycles and dirt, home of the brave, the little devil videos, albert street, all time low etc etc etc etc etc..............................................................................

before the conversation had ended and before the revelation had the time it needed to be completely realised we had found our way to the destination...plug.the rabble somehow organised itself into a que.i was at the back, we had been lagging behind because the conversation had diverted our train of thought away from sticking with the pack and getting to the place.i remember there being a distinct feeling of anticipation in that que.perhaps this was because i had not been out in sheff for at least 2 weeks or maybe it was simply the name of the night.detonation.the act of exploding.the noun perfectly described exactly what i felt like doing the moment i set foot in that place.alas, thsi was not to be.

"got nee id?" i looked around me.i was at the front of the que.in front of me stood the ape like doorman that had uttered those fatal words.inside i could hear an assortment of sounds.tunes, laughter, conversation, the stomping of feet, the grinding of teeth... my anticipation and heart rate dropped.i knew tonight was not to be and i was resigned to my fate.i produced my worthless student card anyway and received confirmation that the night was indeed over, for me at least, and i trudged over to the pizza shop to indulge in a hot and not-so-spicy pizza.and now here i am.the pizza wasn't too bad.however, the night was a bitter dissapointment.at least i've learnt sumit.one thing concerning how to influence the future of bmx.another thing.....to get some proper id.

what a doyle.

lifeless new year

i did the following interview for some zine my mates putting out but i thought i'd put it up on here aswell.i did it a while ago before a release show was planned but now its sorted and is gona happen this friday at uncle alberts in middlesbrough.sss and drunk in hell are also playing so it should be hella sick.

A while ago I spoke to Lifeless, a crossover thrash outfit from the industrial town of Middlesbrough. The band just started out last year and have a 7 track EP out at the end of January, so I decided to ask them a few questions to get them to introduce the band and find out what they’ve been up to, as well as get their views on the current “thrash revival”. The band is made up of Nixon, FMB, Greg, Paul and Pacey. More info myspace.com/lifelessboro.

So the dreaded first question, what made you want to start a band which is essentially thrash in a scene dominated by false metal bands?

Greg- We just wanted to do something different and worthwhile really. The music scene around here is pretty dire so it was nice to buck the trend and give everyone the fingers.

Nixon- I knew inside myself, I wanted to be the guy who tells people to kill, I wanted to be the guy that get’s punched when kids swing for the mic, I wanted to destroy. But false metal, man. Sick new era cap, Sick tight pants. Sick breakdowns. Not for me

FMB- I mean, it all boils down to everyone being an elitist really, haha, we started a band like this cos we thought all the bollocks out at the minute was utter shit. We all know that we’re never gonna be the ‘cool’ band, you know, we don’t have the right hair cuts.

How do you feel you’ve been received so far?

Nixon- Pretty well, most of the bands here suck. Incriminated are the only other band in the Boro I’d consider thrash. Considering ‘thrash’ is meant to be the new ‘buzz’ trend. Every bloke still looks like a girl.

You haven’t been around for too long, but what have been the highlights?

Nixon- Pretty much booking a show, if someone likes us enough to get us to come play for them that’s a highlight for me. It’s not really playing the shows, it’s just hanging out with 4 of my best mates, getting drunk and fucking about.

Are there any other bands any of you have been involved in?

FMB- Well Pacey’s the one with the experience! Marked for Death and the Plague n that. Rest of us have been in daft bands before like. I mean, me and Nixon have been wanting to do this for years, we just never got round to doing it. Then Paul and Greg got interested so we only needed a drummer; we didn’t ask Pacey cos he was already busy with two bands. Then out the blue Nixon mentioned our idea to Pacey and he said “why didn’t you ask me?” so we were like, get on! After a couple of practices we had a self recorded demo and just started playing everywhere we could.

You played some shows in Manchester and London recently with SSS, how did they go?

Nixon- Manchester was a bit crackers, it was midday. Middle of Zavvi, loads of kids, and you could hear us in the shop upstairs. Confidence wise, it was the first time I’d properly been on a stage, I shit It. All the lights were on and I couldn’t’t have the flow. London was class, we were all really tight, got a good reaction, later that night we found some dick talking shit about us on the internet. Just cos we weren’t fucking Gama Bomb or some shit.

How do you feel about the whole “thrash revival” thing? Is it something you pay attention to?

FMB- Nah man, it’ll never get as good as it was when it started, in my opinion anyway. I think most of the bands in this revival thing sound too cheesy, like, too much like maiden. It’s starting to get too much about looks as well. I mean, we got slated on the internet after playing a show in London not so long ago cos none of us had long hair, or the right clothes. Its just stupid. Like, we went to see Gama Bomb not so long ago and personally I thought they were rubbish live, the singer was spending too much time pulling stupid faces.

Paul- If it sounds good I’ll listen to it, if it’s what I think sounds shit I wont. Eighties’s thrash is class; new stuff is good also. I’m not a snob about it really, what’s the point at turning your nose up at something just because it’s new?

How did recording go for the new EP? You go any plans for a release show yet?

FMB- Recording was tricky like, we did it all in like 10 hours. Tensions were running high at times cos we were on such a tight schedule. I mean, you were there for two hours of it! As far as a release show; its gonna be unreal. It’ll be in boro and it’ll be ‘explosive’. I’m not saying any more.

The art work for the shirt and the new EP looks awesome. Who’d you get to do it and how’d that come about?

Nixon- I’d been on the net for weeks looking for someone who could draw. I was checking a few Barf comic forums and a dude called Frans Boukas was getting a fair bit of attention. So I emailed him, a few weeks later he replied, said he’d love to do some artwork, and that’s the story for the shirt. The CD cover was the same, I mailed a guy called matt, he mailed back some art work

What have you got planned for 2009?

FMB- Write a load of new stuff. Play any and all places we can. Get fully signed. Get another record out. Tour like fuck over summer. Smash some European heads hopefully haha.

Nixon- 2009... Well. To be fully excellent, excel at everything we do.

What other bands from the Boro should we be looking out for?

Annihilist (myspace.com/annihilistmetal) and Drunk in Hell (myspace.com/drunkinhell)

Any thanks?

Greg- Cheers Mam
